Arthritis Comes in Different Forms

As most of you know, arthritis is a disease that comes in several forms. Arthritis itself means inflammation of the joints. The most common forms of arthritis are osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, however, there are over one hundred different forms identified. Here is a brief list of some of the more common forms of arthritis. Osteoarthritis is the degradation of the joints, including the cartilage and the bone. This degradation causes the sufferer pain, stiffness and loss of mobility. While there is a hereditary factor in developing osteoarthritis, it is a fairly common disease of ageing regardless of genetics. Rheumatoid arthritis is considered a systemic autoimmune disease. It is systemic because it has the potential to affect many of the body's organs and tissues. Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease because it mistakenly attacks the body's own healthy tissues. Rheumatoid arthritis affects the lining of the joints, the synovium. Juvenile Rheumatoid arthritis is the most common form of arthritis in children. It usually will appear between 6 months and 16 years of age. Just like adult Rheumatoid arthritis, Juvenile Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder. Gouty Arthritis is associated with the disorder gout which is an overload of uric acid in the body that causes the formation of small crystals of urate that deposit in tissues throughout the body. This causes inflammation of the joints which is intensified even more as the immune system reacts to the deposits of the urate crystals. Lupus arthritis is a side effect of the autoimmune disease Lupus. In this disease, inflammation of the joints is common. Sufferers of Lupus arthritis tend to have morning stiffness as well as tenderness around the area(s) of the infected joint(s). Again, these are only a few of the forms of arthritis out there. I hope this helps while you are reading the lay articles!

  1. Here are two other common types of arthritis I though I would share.

Septic Arthritis: Arthritis caused by infection in the joints. Individuals with artificial joints are at a higher risk for developing this type of arthritis.

Psoriatic Arthritis: Is an arthritis caused by inflammation and affects about 10-30% of individuals who have the autoimmune skin condition Psoriasis. It can develop at any age.

The Arthritis Foundation also has a complete list of all the different types of arthritis and can be accessed at the website below.

  2. Thanks for compiling this short review for us, both of you. I was just curious because in class we learned that osteoarthritis was not considered a genetic disease, but in this review you said that it was hereditary. From what I can understand from what you wrote, it appears as though it can be considered genetic but has low risk of developing from it as a cause is that right? By any chance do you know the probability or prevalence of genetic contribution to osetoarthritis?

  3. I had a question about Gouty arthritis because I constantly see commercials on TV for Gout medications and a man carrying around a large beaker of uric acid. Is gout considered a form of arthritis or is arthritis simply an effect? Also, is it an immune response that causes the arthritis in Gout or is it simply deposits of Uric Acid?

  4. Hey Joe, I was also curious as to what the differences between Gout and arthritis were so I did a bit of researching.

It looks to me, based off of some reading, that Gout is a specific type of arthritis which causes sudden and sometimes, severe, attacks of pain. Even though it can affect numerous parts of the body, it mainly targets (oddly enough) the big toe.
Abnormal deposits of uric acid crystals in the joint cartilage, which are later released in the joint fluid, cause this.

I also found this neat table that compared Gout with Rheumatoid Arthritis. Follow this link!

  5. I just wanted to say thank your for this list, I never really knew that there were that many different types of arthritis. After looking at the list from the link provided it just blows my mind at what arthritis can come from. Meaning in something like Hemochromatosis which is what happens when to much iron builds up in the body and one of the symptoms is joint pain which could eventually lead to arthritis or one of the complications for dermatomyositis (muscle disease characterized by inflammation and skin rash) is also joint pain.
