I know we already talked about stroke in class, but I found an interesting article! A study in Sweden showed a reduced risk of stroke in women who drank one or more cups of coffee a day. There was a 23-25% lower risk of stroke in women who drank coffee compared to those who did not. It was hypothesized that coffee may reduce risk by "weakening subclinical inflammation, reducing oxidative stress and improving insulin sensitivity." Here's the link:

Just though I would share, since I'm a big coffee fan!
Although I do love a good cup a coffee, I’m a little skeptical of the study used. Like the article mentioned, one of the biggest limitation is that is used a self-administer questionnaire to determine medical history and history of coffee consumption. Since it was an observational study, there could be a lot of underlying confounding variables associated with this study that could be contributing to the reduction in stroke such as other foods consumed in the patients diet or lifestyle. Also the article mentioned that previous studies on the beneficial effects of coffee on the cardiovascular system and stroke incidence in women have been inconclusive.
